Sara Frances
Johnson-Burrell, age 89 departed this life on Saturday, February 16,
2002, at her home in Elyria, Ohio following a lengthy illness
She was born June 8, 1912 in Langsdale, Alabama. She is the daughter of
Pomp Johnson and Evelyn Blackman. Her family moved to Elyria while she
was very young. In 1925 the family moved to Niagara Falls, N.Y. and then
back to Elyria. In her early time she united with the Union Baptist
Church under the Pastor ship of Rev. Luther Holloway. She served as
church sectary, a member of the youth choir and Sunday School teacher.
In 1942, she returned to Elyria and united with the Second Baptist
Church under the pastor ship of the Late Rev. C.R. Boyd. Sara became
active in the Sunday school as primary teacher and in the Baptist
Training Union. In 1969, Sara became Church Organist for the Children's
Choir and the Senior Choir. She was also a teacher for the Senior
Missionary. Her community service included but not limited to teacher's
aide at Prospect School through R.S.V.P on various committees; served on
various committees for Church Women Unite; worked for the Hot Lunch
meals and Jones Chapel as well as playing organ at Asbury United
Methodist Church, and Good Shepard Baptist Church.
Her interest were music and cake decorating. Her greatest desire was
to be like on of her favorite songs, "If I Can Help Somebody." Those who
knew Sara found it to be true.
Sara Frances was preceded in death by her father Pomp Johnson, her
mother, Evelyn Black, father in 1971; Husband, Irwin in 1977; and son
Robert in 1986.
She leave to cherish her memories a daughter, Carolyn Brown; a devoted
son-in-law, Frank Brown; two grandsons, Alvin Burrell, and Sean Brown.
A granddaughter, Stephanie Reed of Cleveland; two foster daughters,
Marlene Hogg and Joyce Phillips both of Elyria; five great
grandchildren; and many friends.
